DIE SCHULE ALS GASTGEBER In welcher Form ist das Programm im Schulprofil verankert? Anders als der reguläre Israel-Austausch lässt sich das Johannes-Rau-Stipendiatenprogramm nur schwer im Schulprofil verankern, zumal es auf einen Zeitraum festgelegt ist, der sich in einigen Bundesländern mit den Herbstferien überschneidet. Außerdem können sich die Schulen nicht einfach für das Programm bewerben, sondern werden vom jeweiligen Kultusministerium oder Schulministerium benannt. Das macht ein wenig die Exklusivität dieses renommierten Programms aus. Unsere Schule konnte 2017 und 2018 teilnehmen, was meine Schulleitung sehr unterstützt hat, etwa durch die Freistellung der gastgebenden Schülerinnen und Schüler vom Unterricht für den einwöchigen Berlinaufenthalt. Auch die Kolleginnen und Kollegen waren stets dafür offen, dass israelische Gastschülerinnen und Gastschüler in ihrem Unterricht hospitieren, der dann auf Englisch laufen musste. For a couple of years now, the school also accepts Johannes-Rau-Scholarship holders. What do you expect from this? In 2017, the District Government of Düsseldorf passed on the PAD call for participants and invited us to take part. This is how we got to know about the Programme, and at once we were thrilled. Most of all the seminar week in Berlin with its cultural of fers, where I could join as an accompanying teacher, was an enriching experience for the young people from Germany and Israel. In which way has the Programme been rooted in the school's profile? Other than the common exchange with Israel, the Johannes-Rau-Programme is dif ficult to root in the school's profile, even more as it is fixed to a time of the year when in some Federal States it’s the autumn holidays. This makes this renowned Programme somewhat exclusive. Our school was able to participate in 2017 and 2018, with much support from our school administration, such as by releasing the host students from lessons for the one-week stay in Berlin. Also the colleagues there were always very open-minded towards guest students from Israel sitting in on their lessons, which then had to be in English. Wie motivieren Sie Ihre Schülerinnen und Schüler und deren Eltern zur Aufnahme eines Gastschülers oder einer Gastschülerin? Es gibt ja leider keinen of fiziellen Gegenbesuch? Das Programm ist auch so reizvoll, vor allem durch den Berlinaufenthalt, sodass die Jugendlichen nicht lange überreden muss. Außerdem sind die Jugendlichen im Alter zwischen 16 und 18 Jahren so offen und neugierig, dass sie sich sofort auf dieses Abenteuer einlassen. Die Vollfinanzierung des PAD spielt natürlich ebenfalls eine Rolle. Das Einzige, worauf ich bei der Auswahl der Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer achte, ist, dass sie leistungsstark genug sind, um den versäumten Unterrichtsstoff selbstständig nachzuholen. Und die Gegeneinladung erfolgt dann oft privat: Jugendliche und deren Familien besuchen sich gegenseitig, diese Nachhaltigkeit ist großartig. Von unseren fünf Schülerinnen und Schülern, die bisher teilgenommen haben, waren auf Einladung der Israelis bereits drei schon bald nach dem Johannes-Rau-Programm zu Gast in dem Land Israel. Die damals entstandenen Freundschaften bestehen auch heute noch. How do you motivate your students and their parents to host a guest student? Unfortunately, there is no of ficial return visit. As a matter of fact, the Programme is so attractive, most of all because of the stay in Berlin, that there is no need to persuade the young people. Furthermore, youths at the age of 16 to 18 are so open-minded and curious that at once they are ready for the adventure. Of course, the fact that everything is fully funded by the PAD plays a role. The only thing I take care about when selecting the participants is that their performance is good enough to independently catch up with the subject matter they are going to miss. And then, of ten the return invitation happens at the private level: the young people and their fami- 50
lies see each other, this sustainability is great. Of the five students from our school who have been participating so far, three have already been to Israel, on invitation by the Israelis soon af ter the Johannes-Rau-Programme. The friendships established then are still existing. What was your personal highlight during your long-standing exchange experiences? For me, it is always exciting to watch the young people growing together and becoming friends in the shortest span of time. Then everything is a highlight – it may be a trip for water-skiing or an evening in the summer, having spaghetti and playing billiards. In Berlin, the visit at the Federal President's Of fice is impressive. We had great conversations with diplomats. And in 2017 we experienced the ceremony of awarding the Shimon-Perez-Award, and we saw Idan Reichel's performance live – a moment which is unforgettable. And then there is always the tearful goodbye when the Programme is over, and one won't ever forget this. How could the Programme be improved? This is almost impossible! Organisation and tutoring by the PAD are perfect. The only thing which comes to my mind is the return visit – this would be a great step towards consolidating the German-Israeli friendship. For, also the Israelis would like to be hosts. They are so proud of their country and their culture, and they would like to present both, they would like to explain their point of view, to communicate and exchange. From my point of view, the return visit would be a logical conclusion for the Programme. Ihr persönliches Highlight aus den langjährigen Austauscherfahrungen? Ich finde es immer spannend zu beobachten, wie die Jugendlichen in der kürzesten Zeit zusammenwachsen und sich anfreunden. Da wird alles zu einem Highlight – ob unser Ausf lug zum Wasserskifahren oder ein Sommerabend mit Spaghetti und Billard. In Berlin ist der Besuch im Bundespräsidialamt beeindruckend. Wir haben großartige Gespräche mit Diplomaten geführt. Und 2017 haben wir die Shimon-Perez-Preisverleihung miterlebt und Idan Reichels Performance live gesehen ‒ ein unvergesslicher Moment. Und dann der stets tränenreiche Abschied am Ende des Programms, der bleibt einem immer in Erinnerung. Was könnte am Programm verbessert werden? Das ist fast nicht möglich! Die Organisation und Betreuung des PAD ist top. Was mir allenfalls einfällt, ist der Gegenbesuch ‒ er wäre ein großer Schritt, um die deutsch-israelische Freundschaft zu festigen. Denn auch Israelis möchten gerne Gastgeber sein. Sie sind so stolz auf ihr Land und ihre Kultur und wollen beides zeigen, ihre Perspektive erläutern, sich mitteilen und austauschen. Der Gegenbesuch wäre aus meiner Sicht ein logischer Programmabschluss. 51
